Basic Health Care Workshop held at PGC

A One Day Workshop on Basic Health Care with 3rd Semester SEC students was conducted on 20th September 2025 at 10 am, organized by the department of Environmental Science, in collaboration with the Chief Medical office, Phek and Community Health Centre Pfutsero, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Nagaland. The programme was attended by two Medical officers, three nurses from CHC, Pfutsero, Principal, Vice-Principal, PGC, members of the Skill Development Committee, PGC and —— students.

The 1st session programme was chaired by Mr. Wedete Kapfo, Assistant Professor, department of Environmental Science, PGC. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Anungla Pongener, Principal, PGC. She welcomed the resource person and his team. She thanked the CMO Phek for the generous contribution to the college. Briefing on the working of the SEC course Medical Diagnostic, she stressed on the importance of having basic knowledge on basic health care, understanding signs of sickness and how to deal with it by using basic instruments. She further noted on the benefits of the SEC course and the workshop as it aims to equip students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, which in turn contributes personal and family health, and the community at large.
The resource person, Dr. Vephuhu Kezo, started with the definition of health and the importance of being healthy physically, socially, spiritually and mentally: “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body”. He emphasized on causes, risk factors and actions to be taken, of the common diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, srcub typhus, hepatitis, tumor (types: malignant, Benign), diabetes and hypertension; and why awareness of these diseases is important. He also discussed various diagnosis methods like x-ray, mammography and blood pressure measurements.

The two offices also donated equipment including a sphygmomanometer, weighing machine, thermometer, and glucometer for student use.

The second session featured a hands-on demonstration of the sphygmomanometer and glucometer by the medical officers and nurses, giving students practical exposure. The workshop successfully combined theoretical insights with practical training in essential health practices.
