One-Day Seminar On Career Guidance and Women Safety

Pfutsero Government College, through its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), in collaboration with Phek Police, organised a one-day seminar on “Career Guidance and Women Safety” at the college auditorium on Tuesday. The programme brought together police officers, legal experts, entrepreneurs, faculty members and students to discuss career opportunities, cyber safety, entrepreneurship and gender justice.  The seminar was chaired by Smt. Sutoli Sema, Assistant Professor and ICC Presiding Officer, while the invocation was led by Miss Teithuvina Nukhu, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics.  Addressing the gathering on Cybercrime Prevention, Shri Ramneek Gautam, IPS, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Pfutsero, highlighted the growing dangers of digital crimes, particularly among young people. He noted that intimate photographs and videos shared during relationships often become sources of harassment after breakups when one partner circulates such content out of jealousy. He further pointed out that even when intimate images are shared by community leaders or other individuals as evidence in disputes, the content can quickly go viral, causing severe harm to victims. He stressed that ignorance of the law does not protect offenders from legal consequences.  Gautam also warned students about fraudulent loan applications advertised on social media that promise easy loans at low interest rates without collateral. Such applications often gain access to users’ phone galleries, steal personal photographs and use morphed images for blackmail and extortion. He urged students to report cyber incidents immediately, emphasising that prompt reporting significantly improves the chances of recovering lost money and identifying offenders. As preventive measures, he advised students to download applications only from official app stores and to refrain from sharing intimate images online.  Speaking on legal careers and competitive examinations, Shri Sekhotso Rokha, Retainer Lawyer, PDLSA Phek, provided an overview of opportunities in the legal profession and the pathways available for aspiring lawyers.  In her address on competitive examinations, Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Phek, shared resources and strategies for preparing for examinations such as NSSB, SSC-CGL, Bank PO, NPSC and UPSC. She emphasised that regular revision remains one of the most important factors in achieving success in both competitive and university examinations.  Drawing from her own life experiences, Dr. Batra encouraged students to remain determined regardless of their background. She stated that she did not come from a privileged upbringing but was able to clear several competitive examinations without coaching by making effective use of her smartphone to access study materials and books available online. She encouraged students to cultivate a desire to serve society, distinguishing short-term goals and material achievements from broader life aims and visions that contribute to the welfare of others.  Delivering a session on entrepreneurship, Smt. Nezelu Nyekha, Executive Director, CWWS, Pfutsero, explained that entrepreneurship fundamentally seeks to solve problems within society. She encouraged students to identify challenges within their communities and develop innovative solutions that create value.  Nyekha distinguished between entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship, explaining that entrepreneurs are individuals who initiate ventures, while entrepreneurship refers to the broader process of creating and managing systems that transform ideas into value-generating enterprises. She highlighted several entrepreneurial opportunities within the Chakhesang community, including agropreneurship, social entrepreneurship and food entrepreneurship, and stressed that successful entrepreneurs focus on adding value to society.  Following a short break, the seminar resumed with a session on Women Safety.  During the session, Shri Sekhotso Rokha outlined important legal provisions relating to the rights of women and children. He highlighted the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, noting that it is gender-neutral and provides strong legal protection for all children below the age of 18 years. He also discussed the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which guarantees free and compulsory education for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years.  In her address on gender justice, Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra emphasised the importance of equality between men and women. Comparing men and women to the two legs of the human body, she remarked that just as a person with only one leg cannot effectively compete in a race, a society cannot progress when one gender is left behind.  She also spoke extensively on the importance of consent in relationships, stressing that “No means No.” Dr. Batra highlighted legal protections available to women against stalking, voyeurism and all forms of unwanted contact, whether occurring at home, in workplaces or on digital platforms.  Calling upon students to become ambassadors of gender and social justice, she urged them not to remain silent when confronted with instances of discrimination or injustice within their communities. She further stressed the importance of empowerment, encouraging victims of abuse and harassment to seek justice rather than feel helpless or powerless.  At the same time, Dr. Batra cautioned against the misuse of legal provisions through the filing of false cases, noting that such actions undermine efforts to protect genuinely vulnerable individuals and make it more difficult for authorities to deliver justice to deserving victims. The programme sought to equip students with practical knowledge and inspire them to become responsible, informed and socially conscious citizens.
