One-Day Colloquium Series V

The Research Committee of Pfutsero Government College, in collaboration with Phek Government College, organised a Lecture Talk under the One-Day Colloquium Series V on 30th October 2026.
The session was chaired by Ms. Nekhotsolu Chuzho, Assistant Professor, Pfutsero Government College. The colloquium featured two distinguished resource persons: Dr. Levinu Sakhrie, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, Phek Government College, and Dr. Nisekhoto Nisa, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Phek Government College.

The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Levinu Sakhrie on the topic, “The Governance Crisis in North East India: Implications for Democracy and Development.” In her presentation, Dr. Sakhrie highlighted several major challenges confronting governance in North East India, including the lack of transparency and accountability in public institutions, ethnic diversity, corruption and uneven development. Referring to the World Bank’s emphasis on transparency and accountability as essential elements of good governance, she observed that these principles remain inadequately practised in the region.

She further explained that while ethnic diversity enriches the cultural fabric of North East India, it can also become a source of conflict due to competition over resources, political power and recognition. Corruption, which remains a persistent challenge in political societies, further undermines effective governance. She also pointed out that the region continues to lag behind other parts of the country, facing not only underdevelopment but also significant disparities in development within the region.

Discussing the implications of these challenges, Dr. Sakhrie highlighted the resulting crisis of political transparency and accountability, the prevalence of corruption and the widening social gap. She emphasised the need to broaden spaces for dialogue and negotiation, encourage greater public participation and strengthen public welfare initiatives to address these concerns.

The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Neisekhoto Nisa on the topic, “Toxicity Assessment of Parkia timoriana Methanolic Extract in Wistar Albino Rats: An Acute and Sub-Acute Oral Toxicity Study.” The presentation focused on the experimental assessment of the toxicity of Parkia timoriana methanolic extract using male Wistar albino rats through acute and sub-acute oral toxicity studies. The rats were divided into four groups for hematological, serum biochemical and histopathological analyses.

The findings indicated evidence of liver and kidney damage at higher doses of the extract. However, the study revealed no significant adverse effects at or below the No-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level (NOAEL) of 100 mg/kg. The presentation provided valuable insights into the potential toxicity of the plant extract and its effects on vital organs.

Following the presentations, an interactive discussion was held, allowing participants to engage with the speakers and exchange ideas on the topics discussed. The concluding remarks was delivered by Ms. Neizevonuo Suokhrie, Assistant Professor, Pfutsero Government College.

The One-Day Colloquium Series V served as a valuable platform for academic exchange, knowledge sharing and intellectual engagement. By bringing together diverse fields of study, the programme also provided an opportunity for multidisciplinary learning and strengthened academic collaboration between the two institutions.
