Pfutsero Government College celebrated its 8th Alumni Day on Thursday under the theme “Ad Meliora”, meaning “towards better things,” bringing together alumni, faculty members and students to reflect on the institution’s journey and strengthen ties between the college and its former students.
Addressing the gathering as guest speaker, entrepreneur Shri Tewu Mero called upon alumni to uphold the values and principles instilled during their college years and contribute meaningfully to society. Emphasising the importance of self-reflection, he urged the gathering to assess their personal progress, set meaningful goals and consider the legacy they wished to leave behind.
Mero highlighted education as a means of empowerment and transformation, stressing that individuals must take responsibility for their lives rather than dwell on missed opportunities or blame circumstances. In an age of rapid technological change and abundant information, he underscored the importance of wisdom, critical thinking and sound decision-making over the mere accumulation of information. He also encouraged alumni to embrace challenges, uphold integrity and work collectively towards positive social change, rather than merely complain about problems in society.
In her address, Principal Dr. Anungla Pongener expressed appreciation for the alumni’s contributions to the college and described them as ambassadors and elder siblings of the institution who could serve as role models for current students. She encouraged alumni to strengthen their engagement with the college and suggested more purposeful initiatives, including educational and interactive programmes involving students, faculty members and parents.
The Alumni Association’s contributions to campus development were acknowledged during the programme. These included two excellence awards to the best teacher and the best student, a quotation frame, a rest shed and a college map, among other initiatives. The importance of an active alumni association in supporting institutional development and the college’s NAAC-related efforts was also highlighted.
The programme featured the presentation of the TL Singsit Award for Best Teacher to Ms Zacivelu Shijoh of the Department of Tenyidie and the Best Graduate Award for academic excellence and overall performance to Miss Shevolu Chuzho of the Department of Political Science.
The programme was chaired by Ms. Nüzholü Hesuh, followed by the college anthem, invocation by Mr. Peri Mekru and welcome address by Mr. Suvikhru Rume. A special presentation by Rhapsody School of Music and a short speech by Madam Neipreü Tavezo preceded the award distribution. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ravoto Chiero and benediction by Ms. Mese-u Wetsah.
The 8th Alumni Day reaffirmed the importance of sustained alumni engagement, mentorship and collective responsibility in advancing the college and contributing to the wider community.
